Trey Lance: What does the Future Hold for the former North Dakota State QB?

Trey Lance was one of the biggest risers during the 2021 NFL draft combine, scouts loved his rocket arm and elite athleticism that could make him a dual-threat stud at the next level. Lance was projected to go in the 1st-2nd round, but nobody thought he’d land as high as No. 3 OVR. The 49ers moved three first-rounders including No. 12 overall in the 2021 draft to the Dolphins in exchange for the third overall pick. The 49ers were looking for their future QB and they had many options between Ohio State QB Justin Fields, Alabama QB Mac Jones, and North Dakota State QB Trey Lance. Many reporters and insiders thought the 49ers were going with Mac Jones, however, they surprised everyone when they selected Trey Lance third overall. The 49ers had the plan to sit Lance and let him learn behind current QB Jimmy Garoppolo for the 2021 season. Lance would be used in some QB run packages close to the goal line as another weapon for Shanahan’s offense.

He did start two games and took over for Jimmy G against the Seahawks and it was mostly mixed results for the rookie signal caller. He finished his rookie year with 603 yards, 5 TD, and 2 INT including 168 yards on the ground and an additional score. Year 2 was on the way and Lance was given the keys to the 49ers as they searched for a trade partner for Jimmy Garoppolo. Unfortunately, they weren’t able to trade Garoppolo as he started the year on the roster. Lance struggled against the Bears although in horrible playing conditions. Unfortunately, Lance would fracture his right ankle in the first quarter of the second game of the season against the Seahawks and his season would be over. Now the question is, what does the future hold for the young QB? Lance has all the traits to be a top QB in the NFL one day, his rocket arm mixed with elite athleticism could make him a matchup nightmare in year three if he comes back fully healthy. Kyle Shanahan is one of the top offensive minds in the NFL and will know how to play to Lance’s strengths. There was a reason that the 49ers moved up in the draft to get this kid even though rumors have circulated that Shanahan wanted Mac Jones as opposed to Lance. The big investment the 49ers made to move up to get a QB will almost surely give Lance more time and allow him to return as the full-time starter in 2023 and beyond. However, Lance, having not played for basically two full seasons, will have all the cards stacked against him
